Meet Shark Fin Soap, a limited edition soap from LUSH. Shark Fin Soap was created to educate the world about the horrors of shark fishing.
Shark Fin Soup: In China, Shark Fin Soup is a delicacy, mostly eaten at wedding parties or shared between the bride and the groom. It’s considered to be a royal delicacy & to bring health to the body, because during the Imperial Era, the Emperors were the only ones who ate this soup. However, Shark Fin Soup is actually horrible for the body. Shark contains shockingly high levels of mercury. A shark can swim around its whole life with high levels of mercury in its system. Mercury is toxic to humans. So why do we continue to slaughter millions of sharks every year?
Shark Finning: The process of catching & hauling sharks aboard vessels, cutting off their fins, and then tossing them back into the ocean. Without fins, sharks can’t swim. So, they’re left to sink to the bottom of the ocean and drown, or they’re eaten alive by other predators. Since sharks are only killed for their fins, up to 95% of the shark is wasted.
The Impact: Sharks have been swimming in our oceans for the past 400 million years. But due to the mass overfishing of sharks for Shark Fin Soup, shark populations in certain species have declined by 90%. Sharks develop and reproduce slowly, so they can’t recover as fast as other fish. Sharks help keep the food chain balanced in the oceans.
The practice of shark finning is banned in United States & Canadian waters, but importing shark fin products is not. Sign the petition to ban all shark finning practices.
